Dear Prudence writes a, “why aren’t we spending more time blaming the victims?” article. Her thesis is that we need to tell young women that if they get drunk, they are more likely to be assaulted. Because apparently young women aren’t already getting that message all day every day?
Ann Friedman responds with a pronoun-swapped version of Prudie’s piece. Here is a sample quote:
Young men are getting a distorted message that their right to match each other drink for drink is proof of their masculinity. The real masculine message should be that when you lose the ability to be responsible for yourself, you drastically increase the chances that you will become the kind of person who, shall we say, doesn’t have others’ best interest at heart. That’s not saying all men are rapists; that’s trying to prevent more rapes.
